The Power of Mentoring

By: Katie Eliot PhD, RDN

Earlier in April, it was time for me to head back to DC for the National Academy of Medicine's Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education, where I represent the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics on the Forum..  This bi-annual meeting brings together the brightest minds in IPE from over 64 professional organizations globally.

I always look forward to the Forum meeting but this one was particularly important to me – I was able to spend quality time with one of my most cherished mentors, Dr. Kathy Kolasa.  Kathy and I met at the Forum in 2013 when I presented a poster on my research in IPE assessment.  We had an instant bond over our shared passions for all things IPE and wanting to move the needle within our own profession.  Over the past almost six years, Kathy has been my silent champion, pushing me to do more and be more, both professionally and personally.

Together we have authored three peer-reviewed papers relating to IPE in nutrition and dietetics and this fall, we will present a platform presentation “Interprofessional Approaches to Addressing Stress and Burnout in Health Care“ at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Food and Nutrition Expo in Philadelphia.   These professional activities have given me the opportunity to learn from Kathy in real time.

Whether it’s the politics of communicating information to others or thinking about how to maximize the impact of our work, Kathy is always there with a guiding word or note of encouragement.  Together, we have achieved more than I ever could alone and I am truly grateful for her as my mentor and friend.

The Forum meeting itself presented an excellent opportunity to reflect on the past and dream about the future of the Forum.  Proceedings from the nine Forum workshops have been downloaded and used across the globe, along with the many discussion papers on various topics from across the health professions continuum.  The Forum continues to serve as a thought leader in interprofessional education and practice.  I look forward to seeing where the Forum goes in the future!

By the way...
It’s my tradition to make it out for a run on the mall while I’m in DC – this year did not disappoint!
